The ending of the 400 Blows in particular is clearly influenced by Rome Open City - both are ambiguous in the tone of the ending scene. In the final scene of the 400 Blows, Antoine has escaped reform school and has finally made it to the sea. The film ends with a frozen close up of Antoine's face.
